What is Functional Nutrition?

Functional nutrition is one of the main pillars of Functional Medicine. It is rooted in the ancient knowledge that food is the best kind of medicine (or the slowest form of poison – depends on the choices). It is not just a fancy punchline of Functional medicine practitioners. It is based on the fact that everything that we eat, and drink is directly interacting, communicating and signaling to every cell in our body. It is the best medicine when it comes to immunity and longevity. Food makes a huge difference between how we feel now and how we will feel later in life. It is that “magic pill” with zero side effects when it comes to preventing, treating, and even reversing multitude of chronic conditions as it has the capacity to upregulate or downregulate our genes expression.

Functional nutrition is a holistic approach to nutrition, that focuses on addressing the underlying causes of a disease and imbalances in the body, rather than just treating the symptoms. It involves a detailed understanding of a person’s medical history, lifestyle, environmental factors, psychological triggers, – it is a highly individualized approach.

Since the foods we eat have the power to affect our health and well-being, the emphasis of Functional nutrition is on making strategic food choices, based on a diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods, such as fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds and a good quality protein.
Many studies have shown that certain compounds in plant foods have powerful medicinal properties, that can lower the risks of certain chronic and, what is called, “lifestyle diseases”,
such as heart disease, diabetes, certain types of cancer and cognitive decline.
